Audism is an attitude that is focused on the superiority of hearing people over Deaf people. It is based on the belief that hearing people are more capable, intelligent, and socially accepted than Deaf people.


Audism is not only the prejudice against Deaf individuals, but the belief behind this prejudice. Let’s review.

There are many forms of audism. The majority of people who commit audism do so inadvertently.


Many do not have conscious negative feelings towards the Deaf community but they commit audism simply out of ignorance. Regardless of the reasons, education is key to eliminating and preventing discrimination of the Deaf community.
