While auto-captions can be a convenient option, they are not ADA compliant for the following reasons. They are often significantly delayed or incorrect, and do not allow for editing. Our post-production captions are written by a certified captioner and undergo a review process to ensure accuracy before being imbedded into the recorded content.

How long does it take to get overlay on my video?
Each project timeline is quoted on a case by case basis due to varying complexity, length, and needs. We recommend requesting services with at least 2 weeks lead time but urgent requests can be accommodated as needed.
What is the difference between closed captions and an ASL overlay?
Closed captions offer a written English alternative to sound that is displayed on the screen. This is used for those who primarily communicate in English. ASL overlay is when an ASL interpreter is added to an existing video. ASL overlay is added to make videos accessible to those who primarily communicate in American Sign Language.

Any pre-recorded video can include ASL overlay. DSU has provided post-production ASL overlay for a variety of video styles. These styles include (but are not limited to): trainings, entertainment, webinars, emergency statements, museum tours, social media, educational content, marketing, and informational videos.
