Conference Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)

VRI 1

Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) brings the power of interpretation to your fingertips. With just a few clicks, a live, professionally certified interpreter can be present in any setting with the right devices and plans in place.

Conferences and Lectures are a great example of settings where VRI can be a useful tool for Deaf and hard-of-hearing attendees when an on-site interpreter may not be available. The following factors should be considered when requesting VRI services for your upcoming lecture or conference.

  • Subject Matter: Is the presentation covering niche content or information in a field such as IT, mathematics, engineering, etc? Be sure to include any topics that may have specific jargon in your service request form so our interpreters have plenty of time to prepare.
  • Devices: How do you plan for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing consumers to view the signing? Will the interpretation be displayed at the head of the room? Will hand held devices be available for each consumer to use at their seats? No matter the route you choose, ensure the devices being used have proper charge, wifi connection, and the link accessible for the video chat application being utilized such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, etc.
  • Audio: For larger settings like conferences, it is imperative for the device displaying the interpreter to be directly linked to the audio source so room noise does not affect their ability to interpret what is being presented. If there will be a chance for audience participation or questions, ensure there is chat feature enabled or that the interpreter will be able to voice for them for the presenter to be heard. The clearer the audio source, the clearer the interpretation.
  • Lighting: Consider the lighting in the presentation space and how it may affect interpretation. Is the presenter properly lit for the remote interpreter to have view of what they may be referring to on the screen? Additionally, is there properly lighting for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing consumers to be able to view the remote interpreter on the respective device?
