Consulting
Deaf culture consultation provides a window into the Deaf and hard of hearing world and improves cultural competency to better equip businesses, communities, and campuses serving the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
Deaf Culture
Deaf Culture TrainingDeaf and hard of hearing communities have a vibrant and rich culture with an interesting history.
DSU provides consulting services on Deaf culture, communication styles, accommodations, and best practices to corporations, government agencies, and colleges and universities throughout the country. Consultation can be facilitated one-on-one, or in small group meetings, test groups, and trainings. These services are especially helpful in forging collaborative environments for Deaf and hearing people alike.
DSU is happy to offer our Training Solutions platform which allows businesses and organizations to provide Deaf Culture training to their employees through our online, video-based training platform.
Communication Styles
For Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, culture and language intertwine, with language reflecting characteristics of culture.
As a result, the communication styles of many Deaf and hard of hearing individuals can be very different from communication styles used by hearing individuals. This consultation helps to bridge that gap and encourage understanding.

FAQs
What happens during a consultation?
During your consultation, one of our accessibility experts will learn about your organization’s communication needs, event or program goals, and compliance requirements. We’ll then recommend customized ASL interpreting, captioning, or VRI solutions to ensure full access for Deaf and hard-of-hearing participants.
How soon can services be scheduled after a consultation?
In most cases, services can be scheduled right away. Our nationwide network of interpreters and captioners allows us to provide fast turnaround times, even for urgent or last-minute requests.
What information should I have ready for a consultation?
It’s helpful to have details about your event or setting (such as dates, format, and number of participants), any past accessibility services you’ve used, and your organization’s preferred platforms or technology. Don’t worry if you’re new to this — we’ll guide you through it.
Do you provide consultation for ongoing service needs?
Yes! We work with many organizations on long-term accessibility planning, including staff training, compliance strategy, and ongoing interpreting or captioning support. Whether you need a single event covered or a full accessibility plan, we’re here to help.
