Video Remote Interpreting in a Council/Panel Discussion Setting

VRI 2

Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) may be a suitable alternative to onsite interpreting in a panel discussion or council meeting setting if the proper measures are taken advance to ensure success.

VRI in a panel discussion setting is unique as it combines setting factors of both conferences, in that large crowds might be present, and small group settings, in that multiple people may be presenting and speaking.

These setting characteristics require additional planning and preparation in advance for VRI success. Below are some questions to consider in your planning and preparation…

  • If the audience is invited to ask questions or share, are their clearly marked microphones for attendants to utilize rather than just speaking aloud?
  • Are all microphones/audio sources running through the receiver connected to the remote interpreter for signing?
  • Will there be a chat function or will there be a speaker for the remote interpreter to voice questions for the Deaf attendees?
  • Are there enough microphones to capture all the panelist voices when sharing for the remote interpreter to hear?
  • Do you have a device with wifi and audio access connected and tested for the Deaf attendee to use to view the interpreter?
  • Are panelists informed of Deaf attendants and aware to speak clearly and avoid interruption?
