Video Remote Interpreting is a great communication access tool for smaller settings and meetings, even when there may be a divided landscape between the hearing and Deaf parties. Especially in post-Covid 19 reality, divided landscapes are common situations that still demand communication access. Whether division is needed for security protocols, PPE safety measures, or industry standards, VRI can still be utilized. Below are a variety of potentially divided landscape settings and considerations to take when utilizing VRI in these settings.
Jail/Prison Visitations
Jails, prisons, and other confinement institutions often have dividers in place for visitations, meetings, and consultations as security protocols. VRI may still be useful for Deaf and hearing parties if proper measures are taken to ensure the set up. If the divider is soundproof, it is pivotal microphones and speakers are utilized on either side of the divider so the interpreter can hear the voicing speaker and can voice for the Deaf individual to the hearing individual. The remote interpreter must be visible for the Deaf individual without obstruction, even glass, to ensure proper view of what is being signed. All of these efforts help maintain the integrity of the communication being exchanged.
SSA/DMV/DOL
Various local and federal entities utilize dividers with consumers for safety and security. Deaf and hard-of-hearing consumers or staff may still utilize VRI when needed for appointments such as registrations, information updates, etc. It is important for Deaf consumers visiting these offices to have way of noting communication access needs when making their appointment so time allows to request an interpreter. Once services are confirmed, it is important at the time of the appointment to have devices set up and ready to use when the Deaf consumer arrives. Don’t forget to ensure the device displaying the interpreter has proper access to wifi to connect via virtual call for the appointment.
Pharmacy/Bank
An array of private service industries also utilize dividers between staff and consumers to ensure consumer safety and protection of goods. Reasonable accommodations should not have to jeopardize security protocols as long as proper preparation occurs in advance. Ensure your team knows what to do in the event of a Deaf consumer needing services including how to request services, test audio and speakers for the device, and connect to to the VRI call. Be sure to allow extra time for communication when utilizing VRI for the natural delay in signing and voicing in translation.
