all insightsWhy It’s So Important To Have Specialized Interpreters
It’s estimated that there are roughly 6500 languages spoken in the world today.
And as you know, each of those languages contains a unique set of nuances, subtleties, and word usages.
The same is true as it pertains to various business and professional settings.
What this means is that for someone with no prior knowledge in a specific field of study, trying to understand and interpret certain terms and expressions is nearly impossible.
Because of this, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) requires the use of “qualified interpreters.”
The regulations define a qualified interpreter as one “who is able to interpret effectively, accurately and impartially both receptively and expressively, using any necessary specialized vocabulary.”
Why is this so important? Consider the field of Healthcare.
Healthcare is a serious enterprise. Errors in communication can pose risks to patients and liability to the healthcare provider.
Interpreters working in healthcare settings often become an essential member of the healthcare provider team.
To function effectively, interpreters need to be familiar with specialized medical vocabulary and discourse; healthcare settings, systems, and personnel; be able to negotiate professional relationships both with patients and healthcare providers; and be prepared to face diverse ethical challenges.
Another area of crucial importance is in the college classroom.
Having interpreters that specialize in each or all of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) is absolutely essential for the Deaf student to gain an accurate understanding of what the professor is teaching.
If those interpreters working in academic settings don’t have the training they need, the student will suffer the fallout. Conversely, when qualified interpretation is taking place, the Deaf student is able to thrive.
The difference truly is that dramatic and that’s why here at DSU, we are happy to be able to provide specialized interpreters for virtually any situation.
